All Night Radio 5 Year Anniversary Special

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

The idea for this homepage was actually born when All Night Radio’s Spirit Stereo Frequency hit our ears and minds five years ago. We loved Beachwood Sparks before that but through the different solo projects which saw the light of day in 2004 we (Mathias and Staffan) started to meet up and comparing booklets and information about the genealogy of the band, its members and the different recordings. When all this new music and collaborations started to happen we realized that we needed to investigate which members who had played what in which band and how this all came together in the different recordings. Once we had done that we felt that a lot of work (which mostly can be found in the members section) could be helpful to others as well and therefore we decided to put together this page. It is meant to be a homage to the band and their music but also a helpful source of information for fans of Beachwood Sparks and other psychedelic music.

It is now five years ago we started doing this and we felt it would be fun to do a special celebration of Spirit Stereo Frequency which we feel is one of the best albums of all time, but also a forgotten work. It seems like the mainstream have caught up with the mood and sounds of All Night Radio through works from also great bands such as Caribou and Animal Collective. We don’t think these bands are undeserving of the praise coming their way but we feel that All Night Radio should be recognized with more an important legacy. Therefore we have contacted both members of the band and conducted interviews with them. You can read those now in our special Spirit Stereo Frequency-section. We also have written a text about the album and collected some media about the band. Enjoy!

Aaron Sperske with Ariel Pink

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

We at thecalmingseas might seem old fashioned but we do our best to keep it up with the modern times. One sign of that is that we’ve spotted Aaron Sperske joining Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti through the social phenomena known as Facebook (also known as satans playground). We hope to get back to you with more info about whether Aaron’s just touring with the band or planning on recording with them as well.

The reunion picks up pace…

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

This past weekend Farmer Dave joined his (former?) band mates on stage for four California shows and thus completing the classic Beachwood Sparks lineup of Gunst, Rademaker, Scher and Sperske! You can read a short review of the shows in our forum. Thank you Michael!

Also, The Tyde premiered a brand new song, “Banned”, at the Echo on Friday. Check it out here.

The Quarter After visit Europe

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

The Quarter After (with Rob Campanella, producer of The Tyde, Beachwood Sparks and contributor to frausdots) are heading out on a tour to Europe this fall. They’ll be visiting UK, France and Spain so if you’re living there you should check them out. More specific information on tour dates will be available soon on the bands official homepage

Fans of Beachwood Sparks should really check out this band. We got the chance to talk to Rob Campanella a while ago and he shared his love of the Sparks with us saying that there are a couple of songs on the new album (which we wrote a news item about a couple of weeks ago) which would never have been made with out inspiration from the music of our beloved cosmic cowboys. You can stream their new album in entirety here

We at The Calming Seas hope to perform and post an interview with Mr. Robbie C about his work with The Tyde, Beachwood Sparks, frausdots & other artists in a month or two. Be on the look out for that!
